Theatre is steeped in tradition, rituals and superstitions that add to its mysticism and magic. Over the centuries, many customs have become an unquestioned part of the business that we call show. While most know it’s “bad luck to say good luck on opening night” or ever , we dig into theatre history to unearth the origins of these rules.

Hershey Theatre is Hershey Pennsylvania’s premier performing arts center, presenting the finest in touring Broadway shows, classical music and dance.

Constantin Stanislavski started working in theater as a teen, going on to become an acclaimed thespian and director of stage productions. He co-founded the Moscow Art Theatre in and developed a performance process known as method acting, allowing actors to use their personal histories to express authentic emotion and create rich characters. Continually honing his theories throughout his career, he died in Moscow in Sources offer varying information on the exact day of his birth.

He was part of a wealthy clan who loved theater: His maternal grandmother was a French actress and his father constructed a stage on the family’s estate. Alekseyev started acting at the age of 14, joining the family drama circle. He developed his theatrical skills considerably over time, performing with other acting groups while working in his clan’s manufacturing business.

In , he gave himself the stage moniker of Stanislavski — the name of a fellow actor he’d met. He married teacher Maria Perevoshchikova three years later, and she would join her husband in the serious study and pursuit of acting. In , Stanislavski founded the Society of Art and Literature, with which he performed and directed productions for almost a decade.

The theater’s subsequent production of The Seagull was a landmark achievement and reignited the career of its writer Anton Chekhov , who went on to craft plays specifically for the company. Stanislavski co-directed productions with Nemirovich-Danchenko and had prominent roles in several works, including The Cherry Orchard and The Lower Depths. In , Stanislavski took a sabbatical and traveled to Italy, where he studied the performances of Eleanora Duse and Tommaso Salvini.

Their particular style of performance, which felt free and naturalistic in comparison to Stanislavski’s perception of his own efforts, would greatly inspire his theories on acting.

While there was no mention of ice in the scene, the play was set in the summer, so the actor felt the drink needed to have ice. I was in a musical where one of the actresses was constantly late for rehearsals. Not five or ten minutes late, more like 30 to 45 minutes late.

There might be an occasional phone call or text to the stage manager, but not many. Finally, two weeks before opening night, the director called her out for being late yet again. Needless to say this shocked the bully and she stormed out of the theatre. If someone displays this sort of behavior in one of my shows, I will not cast that person again.

By youngvicstaff 15 Jun This month the YV Directors Program ran a ‘speed-dating‘ event in collaboration with our friends at Theatre The idea behind the event was to give writers and directors an opportunity to find new collaborators and partnerships for the future. Each pair met for a five minutes chat, before moving on to the next partner at the ding of a bell. At the end of the session there was a longer chance to talk to everyone more informally.

It was a brilliant way of getting a snapshot of people you might want to work with – and who were clearly also interested in meeting new collaborators. So when I was considering what I might want to organise, doing something similar, writers was the first thing that jumped to mind. As a director who works mostly in new plays, I’ve learnt that the best collaborations come out of strong relationships between writers and directors.

Finding writers whose plays you like is obviously the first thing you look for, but having a shared ethic and attitude – basically, a more personal connection – is just as important.
