According to the Kigu archives Josef Kiaschek, a master goldsmith created the first ever powder compact, manufactured from precious metals in workshops in Budapest Hungary. Charles became a goldsmith in New York where he produced precious metal compacts under the Kigu name, whilst George became the founder of Kigu in London. The story, it seems, is that George had travelled to London in to visit business customers and during this visit the Second World War broke out.
As Hungary had come under German influence, George decided to remain in England where he established a factory in Islington, London, a picture of which can be viewed in the Kigu Old Photo Archive. His brother, Paul, continued to run the engineering company in Hungary until the political situation there made this impossible, He then joined George in London.
George had the vision to see the potential for compacts as a desirable vanity fashion item for women in the post-war years and, to capitalise on this, began to design and manufacture affordable, non-precious metal compacts in large numbers for the retail market. One could speculate that this loss of impetus could be linked to the death of George in after which his son, David, continued to run the brand until the early s.
At which time it was acquired by A. Brown brands to add to their own Stratton brand. One of the most iconic novelty compacts produced by Kigu was The Novelty Flying Saucer Powder Compact produced from in a gilt finish. When a girl reached 16 in the s, a pretty powder compact with a spring-loaded powder-plate and inset mirror was regarded not as a merely pretty gift, but an initiation into womanhood. Although early examples can date back to the s, compacts started to become Novelty compacts such as the Kigu ‘Flying Saucer’ and the Schuco animals.
